Which lesson length is right for you?

Learning a musical instrument builds coordination and concentration; develops discipline and perseverance; activates creative thinking, problem solving, self-expression, and self-confidence. Private flute lessons provide one-on-one attention in a safe environment that allows you to explore your individual skills and technique while having fun in the process.

Private flute lessons are highly beneficial for beginners, school band students looking to advance rapidly, and competitive players preparing for competitions and auditions. They are ideal for anyone seeking customized instruction to fix bad habits, improve fundamentals, and learn at their own pace—adults wanting to play for personal enjoyment, too!

The ideal age to start learning the flute is typically between 8 and 10 years old, when children have developed enough physical coordination, lung capacity, and focus to handle the instrument and follow basic instruction. At this stage, they can comfortably hold the flute, understand simple music concepts, and build good practice habits. Small children may require a curved headjoint which reduces the flute's overall length, brings the keys closer to the body, reduces weight, and prevents physical strain.

Flute lessons are held in my home studio in Orléans and are scheduled Tuesdays through Saturdays once per week. Daytime, afternoon, and evening times are available.

I require a minimum of 24 hours notice if you cannot attend your flute lesson. With proper notice, make-up lessons will be scheduled during one day each month. There is a limit of two make-up lessons per term (September to January and February to June). There are no refunds or credits for cancelled or missed lessons.

Please notify me if you are running behind schedule. Note that I back my student lessons up to one another and will not be able to extend your lesson if you are late.

My students are expected to provide their own flute and any books or music that we are working on. You should also have a pencil, a notebook, a metronome, and a tuner.

The amount and duration of practice between flute lessons depends on the student’s age, experience, and goals; however, there are some general guidelines that work well for steady progress. Beginner: 10-20 minutes per day Intermediate: 20-40 minutes per day Advanced: 45-60 minutes per day Adults: 30-60 minutes per day Daily practice is ideal—even just 10–15 minutes each day builds muscle memory. Tip: Break a longer practice session into 2 or 3 shorter sessions if your focus wanes.

Your practice should balance fundamentals with music reading and fun. An intermediate student's practice session may look like the following: 1. Warm-Up (5–10 minutes) Long tones – Play each note steadily and focus on tone quality Simple articulation exercises – Tonguing and slurring 2. Technique (5–15 minutes) Scales and arpeggios – Start slowly, focus on finger accuracy and intonation Etudes – Develop dexterity 3. Repertoire (10–20 minutes) Divide pieces into sections – Practice the most challenging sections first Slow practice – Use a metronome and gradually increase speed 4. Sight-Reading (5–10 minutes) Practice reading unfamiliar pieces to improve note recognition and rhythm 5. Cool-Down/Fun Playing (5 minutes) Play a favourite song Reflect on what improved in your practice and what you can focus on next session Tip: Set small goals for each practice session that keep you focused.
